Your August Home Maintenance Checklist

Stay ahead of seasonal changes with these smart homeowner tips from The Glover Team.

As we head into the final stretch of summer, August is the perfect time for suburban homeowners to knock out key maintenance tasks before cooler temps and the back-to-school hustle kick in. Whether you’re thinking about listing your home soon or just want to protect your investment, this month’s checklist will help you keep your property in top shape.

1. Refresh Your Landscaping

  • Trim overgrown bushes and trees, especially away from the house and AC unit.
  • Pull weeds and re-edge garden beds.
  • Add fresh mulch to retain moisture and prep your yard for fall.
  • Water deeply in the mornings to combat summer heat stress.

Pro Tip: A well-maintained yard boosts curb appeal and shows buyers your home is cared for even before they walk in the door.

2. Clean & Inspect Gutters and Downspouts

Summer storms can fill gutters with debris. Clear them out to avoid water damage and make sure downspouts are directing water away from your foundation.

3. Schedule HVAC Maintenance

Your AC has been working hard all summer. Have it inspected now to ensure it’s running efficiently and ready to transition into heating season.

4. Check Caulking & Weatherstripping

Look around windows and doors for cracks or worn weatherstripping. Reseal or replace as needed to keep energy bills low and eliminate drafts.

5. Wash Exterior Windows & Screens

Give your windows a late-summer shine while the weather’s still warm. Clean screens can also improve airflow without letting bugs in.

6. Power Wash High-Traffic Areas

Driveways, patios, and walkways collect grime during the summer. A quick power wash can freshen up your entire exterior.

7. Inspect Your Roof & Chimney (From the Ground!)

Look for missing shingles, sagging gutters, or signs of wear around flashing. If anything looks off, it’s best to call in a pro before fall rains hit.

8. Start Prepping for Back-to-School Routine

If you have school-aged kids, this is a great time to declutter mudrooms, create homework stations, and organize entryways for smoother mornings.

9. Test Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Do a quick test on all units and replace batteries as needed. (This is especially important if you’re listing soon as these will be checked during inspection.)

10. Start Planning Fall Projects

Thinking of selling in the fall or early next year? Now’s the time to consult with our team about what updates will add the most value to your home and which ones to skip.
