The Importance of Local Elections
Do They Impact The Housing Market?
Local elections may not always capture the same level of attention as national races, but they have a direct and lasting impact on our communities. These elections determine the leaders who shape policies affecting our daily lives, from infrastructure and public safety to education and housing regulations. In communities across the country, the decisions made at the local level influence property values, zoning laws, and economic development, making it essential for residents to stay informed and engaged.
Why Local Elections Matter
Unlike national politics, where changes may take years to trickle down, local policies can have immediate effects. Elected officials at the municipal level determine how tax dollars are spent, the quality of public services, and the future of development projects. Local government also plays a crucial role in maintaining property values by ensuring that community resources, such as schools, parks, and roadways are adequately funded and well maintained.
For homeowners, prospective buyers, and real estate professionals, these policies directly impact the desirability and affordability of a community. Whether you’re considering selling your home, purchasing a new one, or investing in rental properties, the outcome of local elections can shape your financial future in ways that federal policies often do not.
The Impact on the Housing Market
The housing market is deeply intertwined with local government decisions. Zoning regulations, tax policies, and infrastructure investments all influence home values and market conditions. Here’s how local elections can affect the real estate landscape:
- Zoning and Development: Local officials set zoning laws that dictate where homes, businesses, and public spaces can be built. A candidate who supports smart growth and responsible development can foster a balanced housing market, while restrictive zoning can limit supply and drive-up prices.
- Property Taxes: Decisions on property tax rates impact homeowners' costs and, in turn, housing affordability. A well-managed budget that keeps property taxes reasonable while funding essential services makes a community more attractive to buyers.
- Infrastructure and Public Services: Investments in roads, schools, and public transit increase a neighborhood’s appeal. A community with well-maintained infrastructure and high-quality services will see stronger property values.
- Affordable Housing Initiatives: Some candidates advocate for policies to encourage affordable housing, while others prioritize limiting development. These policies influence the availability of homes for different income levels and affect rental markets.
Danny’s Decision Not to Run for Re-Election
After four years of dedicated service as a Downers Grove Village Commissioner, our team member and The Glover Team’s Director of Operations, Danny Glover has made the decision not to seek re-election. Below is his statement reflecting on his tenure and the reasons behind his choice:
"Serving as a Downers Grove Village Commissioner has been an incredible honor. Over the past four years, I have had the privilege of working alongside dedicated colleagues, staff, and community members to help shape the future of our town.
As my term comes to an end, I have made the difficult decision not to seek re-election. This decision was not made lightly, but ultimately, it comes down to balance. Between my responsibilities professionally, as a business owner, a husband, and a father, it's become most clear to me that time is my most valuable resource. While I remain deeply committed to our community, I want to ensure that I am fully present for my family and the continued success of our professional endeavors.
I have immense respect for those who have, will, and continue to serve. While there are six amazing individuals who are prepared to devote themselves to this village, I have personally had the opportunity to work with one, and I had an opportunity to participate in a podcast and talk about my decision and the future of Downers Grove with my colleague Chris Gilmartin, who is running for re-election. Although we once ran against one another, and have often found ourselves with differing opinions, I have seen firsthand his dedication, leadership, and ability to collaborate for the betterment of Downers Grove, and I support his campaign Chris Gilmartin - Candidate for Commissioner, Downers Grove.
While I may be stepping away from this role, I will always be invested in the success of our village. I look forward to continuing to contribute in new ways and always remaining an active part of this amazing community.
Thank you for your support, trust, and engagement throughout my time on the board. It has been a privilege to serve, and I am grateful for the opportunity."
